Orange Beach Makes a Statement, Knocks Off No. 2 Vigor 21-19

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Orange Beach entered Friday night with an opportunity to prove its 2-0 start was no fluke.

The Makos did exactly that.

Orange Beach defeated No. 2 Vigor 21-19 in the Southbound Sports Game of the Week, earning a statement victory over one of the area’s most highly regarded programs and remaining unbeaten to begin the 2026 season.

The matchup featured two 2-0 teams entering their Class 4A, Region 1 opener, but the programs arrived with very different expectations. Vigor came to the coast after reaching the state championship game a season ago and had outscored its first two opponents 75-10. Orange Beach was looking to establish itself as a legitimate contender in the region.

By the end of Friday night, the Makos had their answer.

Makos Stand Tall Against Vigor

This wasn’t the type of game Orange Beach had played through the first two weeks.

After defeating T.R. Miller 24-14 and dominating Monroe County 56-0, the Makos faced a Vigor team loaded with experienced talent and one of the area’s best defenses.

Orange Beach didn’t blink.

The Makos found enough offense to put 21 points on the board and, more importantly, kept the Wolves from finding the points they needed late.

Vigor entered the game averaging 37.5 points per contest. Orange Beach held the Wolves to 19.

When the final seconds came off the clock, the scoreboard told the story:

Orange Beach 21, Vigor 19.

A Different Kind of Win

For Orange Beach, the significance goes beyond moving to 3-0.

Friday represented an opportunity for the Makos to show they could win against an established contender.

Vigor entered the week ranked No. 2 in the Southbound Sports Power 10, behind only Saraland. The Wolves opened the season with a 28-7 victory over Blount before dismantling Mary G. Montgomery 47-3.

Orange Beach’s first two victories had been impressive, but Vigor represented a significant jump in competition.

The Makos passed the test.

It’s also a major early result in the Class 4A, Region 1 race. With teams such as Williamson, Vigor, Citronelle and LeFlore sharing the region, every Friday will matter. Starting region play by knocking off Vigor gives Orange Beach an important early victory.

Vigor Suffers Its First Setback

For the Wolves, Friday’s loss drops Vigor to 2-1.

It is the first blemish for a team that had looked dominant through the opening two weeks of the season.

The Wolves still have the talent and experience to be a major factor in Class 4A, and one two-point road loss doesn’t change that. But Friday showed just how difficult Region 1 could be this season.

There may not be many easy nights ahead.

Orange Beach Is For Real

The Makos began the season outside the Southbound Sports Power 10.

That won’t be the case much longer.

Three games into the season, Orange Beach has beaten T.R. Miller, Monroe County and Vigor. The Makos have now won in three different ways — a competitive opener, a blowout and a two-point battle against one of the region favorites.

That’s a résumé worthy of attention.

Friday night wasn’t simply another win for Orange Beach.

It was the kind of victory that can change the perception of a program.

FINAL | Orange Beach 21, Vigor 19

The Makos are 3-0.

And after Friday night in Orange Beach, they’re no longer sneaking up on anybody.
